Food Absurdities

September 6, 2026

Nonscientists seem to be always looking for the magical nutrient that does such things as cure cancer. There are no such magical nutrients. The wishful thinkers are egged on by poor-quality scientists doing something similar in looking for improvements with some strange nutrients. They can always find something in statistical studies, because statistics are too subjective for real science. Statistics can be manipulated, until they get desired results.

Real science based on five hundred years of evolved scientific knowledge says magical nutrients are not possible, because evolution has advanced to such a degree of complexity that every reaction and molecule is locked into a complex set of requirements that do not allow something magical to enter the process. If the magical nutrients existed, they would have already been exploited in normal physiology.

Then there is sliding around of effects pretending that some mechanism has all sorts of properties which it doesn't have. Antioxidant is the number one example. There is probably only one antioxidant that exists in physiology; and it is vitamin-C along with its helper, glutathione. The other so-called antioxidants that are visibly described show no credibility in what is said about them.

The purpose of vitamin-C is to dump an electron onto plus three iron to reduce it to plus two iron, because the stronger ion of iron destroys collagen production, while the plus two form is more safe.

Vitamin-C is destroyed when used, unless glutathione restores it. Vitamin-C is so critical in small amounts that it is attached to a protein, where collagen is being synthesized. Metals such as iron are catalysts; so tiny amounts can do a lot of damage. The protein attached to vitamin-C and glutathione show the extreme measures and small quantities needed to protect collagen synthesis from plus three iron.

Every chemical reaction oxidizes one element and reduces the other. But the claim of promoters of antioxidants is that there are dangerous oxidative radicals that need to be destroyed with antioxidants. There aren't. The supposed radicals have purposes, such as superoxide that ancestors of humans used to break down foreign matter and modern humans still use to a small extent.

Hydrogen peroxide looks like a dangerous molecule that needs to be destroyed; but it is created with a purpose in allowing cytochrome-C to remove an electron from zinc to restore its functionality and then dump the extra electron onto hydrogen peroxide to create water.

The contrivers pretend to see antioxidants in any molecule as a rationalization of some sort in claiming some nutrients are of value as antioxidants. An example is so-called vitamin-E. No mechanism for vitamin-E functionality can be found, because there is none. It evolved in the germ of some seeds as a pesticide.

One of the mechanisms that plants use to combat insects is to put a fat-soluble tail on a complex molecule that animals cannot break down easily. The fat-soluble tail drags the molecule into animal cells, where it has to be broken down as a problematic foreign substance. Quinine is an example, as is vitamin-E.

Rationalizers say vitamin-E goes part way through the animal membrane and stays there to function as an antioxidant. First, there is no such thing as going part way through the cell membrane of animal cells. Then the claim is that a hydrogen atom on the side of the vitamin-E molecule is an antioxidant. There are hydrogen atoms on the side of most biological molecules; and they don't come off to change oxidation states.
