August 11, 2020 Several months after the impeachment, conservatives still can't understand why a president should not use the government to keep himself in power. They say it is a "life-style" dispute. There are campaign laws that say it is illegal. The reason is because democracy doesn't exist unless the people do the deciding. If the president uses the government to railroad an election, then the people are not deciding, and the result is not a democracy. That whole concept is too abstract for conservatives to understand. They can't understand why a president would not use every tool at his disposal to get elected again. There is no bigger tool at the disposal of a president than the government which he administers. So conservatives expect Trump to exploit the government for his re-election. Conservatives are still trying to rationalize Trump's endless attempts to use the government for campaign purposes. There is an underlying set of assumptions that conservatives have. They assume that you defeat the enemy through any means possible, and anyone who thinks otherwise is an unrealistic loser who needs to be defeated, exterminated and prevented from contaminating the social order. Constitutional democracy says otherwise. Yet conservatives want to exploit a government based on constitutional democracy to acquire power which makes a mockery of constitutional democracy. Every dictator follows the same path. They start out getting elected and then prevent elections from throwing them out of power. The Nazis were elected into power and then prevented anyone from removing them from power by murdering political opponents in the public squares every few months, until they had no more opponents. In fact, several years later, they had to murder a group called "The White Rose" for putting criticisms on lamp posts. That's why campaign laws in the U.S. say presidents are not supposed to use government to gain an advantage over political opponents. When conservatives cannot understand that simple fact, they have no business being in government. |
