Absorption Without Emission

Solar radiation graph   infrared radiation graph

Incompetent physicists assume carbon dioxide absorbing radiation produces heat. Why not? Because the radiation is emitted as fast as it is absorbed. But the incompetents don't see the emission on their graphs; they only see the absorption which appears as a dip on the graph.

Graph Dip

Seeing the absorption dip and not seeing emission convinces incompetents that heat has to be the product of the visible absorption. To them, the visible dip is the proof of energy entering the atmosphere. It's their first response to criticism. In their minds, absorption is energy.

What they miss is that the absorbed radiation is re-emitted as fast as it is absorbed. The graphs don't show the emission, because the wavelengths are different.

For carbon dioxide, there are three narrow dips (or peaks) for absorption; but the emission is very wide bandwidth, which is invisible on the graphs when mixed with all other black body radiation.

That's because there are different mechanisms for absorption and emission. The absorption of infrared radiation by carbon dioxide is due to stretching and rotating of bonds between the carbon and oxygen. stretching bondsThose bonds have close tolerances for frequencies. So there are three narrow absorption peaks. (Peaks and dips are graphed either way by inversion of the vertical axis.)

The absorbed energy is instantly transferred to the rest of the molecule causing the whole molecule to vibrate. Vibrating molecules emit wide bandwidth, infrared, black body radiation. The bandwidth is due to molecules bumping into each other in a random way resulting in some short cycles, some longer cycles and everything in between.

The wide bandwidth of emission is spread over the entire infrared spectrum causing it to disappear from view.

Radiation is not emitted from carbon dioxide at the same wavelength as absorbed, because the energy is instantly transferred to the whole molecule as vibratory motion. As the energy moves out from the bonds to the rest of the molecule, there is no longer enough energy in the bonds to be re-emitted at the absorbed wavelengths. So absorption and emission would not be the same wavelength. Vibration of the whole molecule produces broad-band (black body) radiation.

Then the incompetents add the concept of trapping energy. There is no such thing as trapping energy in the atmosphere. The assumption is that the energy absorbed by carbon dioxide sits in place heating the atmosphere, because where it goes is not visible on the graphs.

Every molecule above absolute zero temperature is vibrating; and the vibrations are creating waves. The waves don't escape from opaque solids except on the surface. But the waves escape from transparent gases much more readily.

The atmosphere will cool 20 degrees or more during clear nights due to radiation being emitted easily by the transparent gas.

These radiation effects are miniscule. Conduction, convection and evaporation add huge amounts of energy to the atmosphere; and that energy is not radiated away so rapidly.

The miniscule absorption of radiation becomes instant emission through radiation independent of the huge quantities of energy from conduction, convection and evaporation.
